How to Choose Home Fragrance for Every Room and Season
Choosing home fragrance is about more than finding a scent you like. The right fragrance can change how a room feels, helping an entrance feel welcoming, a kitchen feel fresh, or a bedroom feel calm. I tend to choose fragrance by thinking about the room, the mood I want to create, and the time of year.
Choosing a Fragrance for Each Room
Hallways and Entrances
Your hallway gives the first impression of your home, so choose something inviting without making it too heavy. Clean florals, soft woods, amber, bergamot and gentle musks create a polished welcome and flow easily into the rest of the house.
Living Rooms
Living rooms suit fragrances with warmth and character. Amber, sandalwood, vanilla, rich florals and soft spice can make the space feel comfortable and put together. If the room is large, a fuller fragrance will usually carry better than something very delicate.
Kitchens and Dining Spaces
Fresh, bright scents work beautifully in kitchens. Citrus, herbs, green notes and clean fragrances help the room feel refreshed without competing too much with food. I would avoid very sweet or intensely perfumed scents while cooking or dining.
Bedrooms
For bedrooms, I prefer softer fragrances that help the room settle. Lavender, powdery florals, vanilla, cashmere, gentle musk and creamy woods can create a calm atmosphere. Use a lighter amount of fragrance here, especially in the evening.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms are ideal for crisp, spa-inspired scents. Eucalyptus, sea salt, citrus, clean linen and airy florals make the space feel fresh and luxurious. These notes are also a lovely way to recreate the feeling of a boutique hotel or spa at home.
Choosing Home Fragrance by Season
Spring
Spring calls for fragrances that feel light and uplifting. Think fresh florals, pear, green leaves and soft citrus. These scents work especially well when you are opening the windows and resetting your home after winter.
Summer
In summer, I reach for coastal notes, citrus, coconut, clean cotton and bright fruit. Keep the fragrance airy rather than overly rich, particularly in smaller rooms. Explore our Country & Coastal collection for scents with that open, breezy feeling.
Autumn
Autumn is the moment for amber, woods, fig, plum and gentle spice. These fragrances add warmth as the evenings become darker, without needing to feel overly festive.
Winter
Winter suits deeper, enveloping scents such as vanilla, oud, sandalwood, tobacco, dark fruit and rich amber. Browse our Cosy & Warm collection for comforting fragrances, or choose something from the Dark & Moody collection when you want a more dramatic atmosphere.
Match the Strength to the Space
Room size matters as much as the fragrance family. A bold scent can feel beautiful in an open-plan living space but overwhelming in a small bedroom. Start with a small amount of wax, then add more only if the room needs it. The aim is for the fragrance to feel part of the room, not to overpower it.
Create a Fragrance Flow Through Your Home
You do not need to use the same scent everywhere. Instead, choose fragrances that share a mood or a few notes. A fresh hallway can lead into a warmer living room, while a soft, calming bedroom scent can still feel connected. This creates a considered fragrance journey without every room smelling identical.
Find the Mood That Feels Like You
There are no rigid rules when choosing home fragrance. Start with how you want the room to feel, then explore the notes that create that mood for you. Whether you love fresh coastal scents, warm amber or something dark and luxurious, the best fragrance is the one that makes you enjoy your home a little more.
