How to Use Wax Melts for the Best Scent Throw

There's something really special about walking into a home that smells amazing. Not in a headache-inducing, plug-in-air-freshener kind of way, but in a way that feels intentional. Warm. Like someone who actually cares about their space lives there. That's exactly what wax melts can do for your home, and this guide will show you how to get the absolute best out of them.

Choose the Right Burner

This is where it all starts, and honestly, it makes more of a difference than most people realise. You've got two main options:

Tea light burners often release fragrance more quickly, although performance depends on the design of the burner and the tea light recommended for it. They're brilliant if you want the scent to build sooner.

Electric burners tend to warm wax more steadily, so the fragrance can build more gradually. If you've got a smaller room or prefer a subtler fragrance experience, an electric warmer can be a lovely choice.

For a larger room, consider using a second suitable burner in another safe position rather than overfilling one dish. Always follow the instructions supplied with your burner.

How Much Wax to Use

Start with a small amount that sits safely within the burner dish, following the burner's instructions, and add more only if there is enough capacity. Never overfill the dish. Using more wax does not always mean a better scent throw, and the right amount will depend on the size and design of your burner.

Position for Maximum Scent Throw

Where you put your burner really matters. Try to place it somewhere central, ideally where there's a gentle movement of air to help carry the scent around the room. A stable, heat-resistant surface at a safe height works well. Avoid hiding it behind furniture, placing it in a strong draught, or putting it near curtains and other soft furnishings.

How Long Do Wax Melts Last?

How long a wax melt holds its fragrance varies with the melt, burner, room temperature and length of each use. You can usually warm the same wax again until you can no longer notice the fragrance. Follow any guidance supplied with your wax melts and burner.

When you notice the scent starting to fade and go a bit quiet, that's your sign it's time for a refresh. The wax has done its job!

Refreshing and Changing Your Wax

Switch off or extinguish the burner first, then let the wax and burner cool completely. Remove the solid wax using the method recommended by the burner manufacturer, give the dish a gentle wipe if needed, and make sure it is clean and dry before using it again. Never handle hot wax or try to move a burner while it is warm.

Layering Fragrances

This is one of my favourite things about wax melts. You can blend compatible wax melts to create your own signature scent, provided the combined amount stays safely within the capacity of your burner. Try starting with something grounding as your base, like amber, sandalwood or a rich musk, then add a lighter scent alongside it.

Don't be afraid to experiment. There's no wrong answer here, just whatever feels right for the room and the mood you're going for.

A Quick Note on Safety

Always follow the instructions supplied with your burner and wax melts. Use the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface, never leave it unattended while in use, and keep it away from draughts, curtains, children and pets. If you use a tea light burner, use only the type and size of tea light recommended by its manufacturer.
